July 2025 Newsletter

In this edition, we cover crucial updates and insights on:

  • Europe Inland Congestion Worsens: Major rail works and port congestion across Italy and Germany are pushing more cargo onto road networks, causing trucking shortages, delays, and higher costs—especially around Genoa, Bremerhaven, and beyond.
  • GRI & Rate Restorations from Asia: Carriers have announced General Rate Increases (GRI), Peak Season Surcharges (PSS), and Rate Restorations for Asia–Australia lanes, with USD 200–300/TEU increases from mid-July, and further hikes likely from August.
  • Shipping Schedule Reliability: Global reliability holds steady, but Australia–China routes show a 10% cancellation rate, up from 5% in May. Ongoing geopolitical tensions, reroutings, and equipment imbalances keep caution levels high.
  • Australia’s PFAS Ban from July 2025: The Australian Government will ban key PFAS chemicals under the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Standard. Businesses should review supply chains now to ensure compliance.
  • Cathay Pacific Brisbane Expansion: From 26 October, Cathay Pacific will offer double daily Brisbane passenger flights, adding belly cargo capacity alongside its weekly 747-8 Freighter service, boosting Queensland–Hong Kong trade links.
  • Red Sea Shipping Impact: Recent attacks in the Red Sea are pushing global carriers to reroute, driving up transit times, costs, and supply chain uncertainties for Australian importers and exporters.
  • DAFF Fee Increases: Effective 1 July, DAFF has raised Full Import Declaration charges for both sea and air freight, with small adjustments to processing fees reflected in your Entry Print.
