February 2026 Newsletter

In this edition, we cover crucial updates and insights on:

  • General Rate Increases from 1 March
Carriers are signalling further rate restorations and GRIs across Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and the Middle East to Australia.

  • Chinese New Year – Year of the Horse
Lunar New Year begins 17 February, with widespread factory closures and service reductions expected through late February. Carriers are managing the seasonal slowdown through additional blank sailings rather than peak season surcharges. We strongly encourage early bookings and documentation planning to minimise disruption.

  • Why Truck Fuel Tax Matters
Ongoing debate around diesel and transport cost settings highlights how freight costs ultimately flow through to importers, exporters, and consumers — reinforcing the importance of stable transport policy during cost-of-living pressures

  • Global Schedule Reliability & Port Congestion
Reliability softened late last year, with average vessel delays now exceeding five days. Congestion across Asia-Pacific hubs, winter weather in Europe, and increased blank sailings into Australia (just over 9% this month) continue to create schedule variability

  • Fremantle Port Congestion Levy – From 9 February 2026
Due to the Fremantle Bridge closure, a Congestion Levy will apply to WA container movements during weekday peak hours. After-hours and overnight deliveries are strongly recommended to reduce delays and detention risk
